for people who know that:

the beverage, whether drunk directly from the tin or poured into a glass, comes into contact with the lid of the tin and its rim.

the beverage whashes off the lid whatever substances may be deposited on it and is thus exposed to as many sources of contamination as there are contaminating substances.

for people who realize that:

what happened in Belgium and other European countries in June 1999 (250 people in Belgium and 40 in France were intoxicated by fungy present on lids of soft drink tins) showed how dangerous the system for opening tins currently in use can be.

for people who ever ask itself, some questions about the safety of tinned beverages:

  What is safety?

What are the aims of safety?

  How can safety be measured?

What is meant by a safe product?

Given that the definition of a safe product is "one which presents no risk when consumed in normal conditions of use", is the consuption of tinned beverages safe?

When do we have "normal conditions of use"?

Do "normal conditions of use" include consuption during a mass gathering (concerts, football matches, etc.), on picnics and excursions in the country, or while boys and girls are playng?

Whether it is sufficient to rinse the lid of a tin under running water or wipe it(with a rag, napking or handkerchief) to make it hygienically safe?

Should tins carry warnings about the health risks that can be caused by the consuption of tinned beverages?

How much importance do you think most people, especially young people, attribute to cleaning the lid of a beverage tin before opening it?

Are children and young people more exposed to toxic and infectious risks?

If problems arise, who is responsible? The consumer? The retailer? The distributor? The manufacturer?

What in real terms, are the obligations of the consumer, retailer, distributor and manufacturer in terms of safety?
